Hungry Planet: China

I made a presentation about China cuisine from a book called,"Hungry Planet". By the way, it is about urban area in China. The family below is what we will feature on about what they eat, and how much they spend on their food.

First of all, let's start with brief explanation of this family. This is the Dong family, on the front of the right is Dong Li, and to his left is Zhang Liying, his mother. On their back is Guo Yongmei, Li's wife and on the right is his son, Dong Yan. Zhang Liying is not always with them, and she eats few times a week with the family. They live in an apartment.

They stock a week worth of food at their house. Also, they enjoy a combination of international food(western fast food) and traditional Chinese food. Although Li prefers traditional dishes, his son prefers western fast food such as, McDonalds, KFC and more. They also shop mostly at international supermarkets such as Walmart. There is a saying in China, that they will eat everything with four legs, except for table and everything with two wings except an airplane. This means that they will eat anything edible. They eat bats and weird creatures that could not be eaten in other countries, so this is actually really true.

The picuture above is just those food stand in China. The Dong family spent 1,233.76 yuan which is about $155.06USD. When you compare families from other countries like the US and Australia, they spend half the money for food. They spend most of the money on beverages and they spend less on prepared foods such as sushi rolls.

Lastly, I compared difference between Japanese and Chinese cuisines. Japanese cuisines are likely to be raw food such as seafood, beef or chicken and simple flavors. Compared to that, China is cooked food like deep fried, steamed cooked. They like elaborate food compared to Japan.

This is only about this particular family, so there might be complete difference between with other families. But one thing we know is that they are not in style of eating in traditional food habit, rather they prefer western eating habit.
